Lecco waterfront — The opening landscape and home of Renzo and Lucia
The novel opens with its celebrated description of the branch of Lake Como curving toward Lecco, the setting for the village of Renzo Tramaglino and Lucia Mondella. Here the two silk-weaving peasants plan their wedding. Their village life is soon upended by the tyranny of the local lord, Don Rodrigo.
Lecco was a fortified town in the Duchy of Milan under Spanish rule in the 17th century. It was an important crossing point on the Adda river and a hub for silk and iron production.
Lecco is a lively lakeside city beneath the Resegone mountain, proudly embracing its Manzonian heritage. Visitors follow the literary trail through the town and along the lakefront.

Via Amendola, Lecco — Manzoni's childhood home
The villa belonged to the Manzoni family and is the author's childhood home, which shaped his vivid sense of the Lecco landscape in the novel. The hills, the lake, and the villages around it provide the backdrop to Renzo and Lucia's world, and to Don Rodrigo's menacing presence.
The Caleotto estate was held by the Manzoni family in the 18th century and was where Alessandro spent part of his early years. The house later passed to the city of Lecco.
The villa now houses a museum dedicated to Manzoni and the Lecco civic collections, with period rooms and exhibits on the writer's life and the novel.

Road near Olate, Lecco — Don Abbondio is threatened
On an evening stroll, the timid priest Don Abbondio meets two bravi who warn him that the marriage of Renzo and Lucia 'is not to be performed' on Don Rodrigo's orders. Terrified, Abbondio refuses to marry them the next day, citing invented legal obstacles. This act of cowardice sets the whole plot in motion.
Bravi were armed retainers hired by Lombard nobles in the 17th century, and Spanish authorities issued repeated, ineffective decrees against them. Their power reflected the weakness of law under Spanish rule.
The area around Olate is a hillside suburb of Lecco, with a path commemorating the novel's setting. It is a quiet residential and walking area.
Pescarenico area / Sasso di Somasca hills — Don Rodrigo's stronghold
Don Rodrigo, the arrogant local lord, wagers with his cousin Count Attilio that he will possess Lucia, and sends his bravi to block the marriage. His palace is a fortress of menace where Father Cristoforo confronts him in vain. Rodrigo later dies of plague in the Milan lazzaretto.
The estate is traditionally linked with the fortified ruins and hill sites near Lecco, such as Somasca, though Manzoni never specified an exact place. Such strongholds reflected the power of rural feudal lords under Spanish rule.
The Somasca and Vercurago hills offer scenic walks and the ruins of the Rocca dell'Innominato, which Manzoni associated with the Unnamed's castle. The area is a popular hiking destination.

Pescarenico, Lecco — Father Cristoforo's friary
At the Capuchin convent in Pescarenico, Father Cristoforo, a former nobleman turned friar after killing a man in a duel, welcomes Renzo and Lucia. He promises to protect them and confronts Don Rodrigo. He later arranges their flight, sending Lucia and her mother Agnese to Monza and Renzo to Milan.
Pescarenico was a fishing village by the Adda river outlet of Lake Como, and its Capuchin convent was founded in the early 17th century. The convent was suppressed in the Napoleonic era.
The convent was largely demolished, but the Church of Saints Materno and Lucia remains in the old fishing quarter. Pescarenico is a picturesque district with Manzoni monuments.

Lake Como shore at Lecco — Lucia's departure
Fleeing by night in a boat with Renzo and Agnese, Lucia gazes at the mountains and her village receding in the dark. Her lament, 'Addio, monti sorgenti dall'acque', is one of the most famous passages in Italian literature. It captures the pain of exile from the familiar world.
The Adda and Lake Como waterways were the main routes for travel between Lecco and the Bergamo and Milan territories. Manzoni drew on his own memories of the lake.
The shoreline offers views of the mountains described in the passage, and a monument with the text can be seen near the lake. Boats still depart from Lecco's piers.

Monza — Gertrude's convent and Lucia's refuge
Lucia and Agnese take refuge in Monza under the protection of Gertrude, the 'Signora', who was forced into the convent by her family. Gertrude's tragic story includes her seduction by the criminal Egidio and a murder committed to cover their secret. Her patronage of Lucia puts the girl in danger when Don Rodrigo's allies find her.
The real Nun of Monza, Marianna de Leyva (Suor Virginia Maria), lived in the convent of Santa Margherita in the early 1600s and was convicted of crimes in a notorious scandal. Manzoni based Gertrude on her story.
The former convent of Santa Margherita is in the center of Monza, and the Church of Santa Maria in Strada and other sites recall the history. The nearby Duomo of Monza and the Villa Reale draw visitors.

Near Lecco and Vercurago — The Unnamed's fortress
The Unnamed, a feared outlaw lord, has Lucia kidnapped at Don Rodrigo's request and imprisoned in his castle. Moved by her desperate pleas, he suffers a sleepless night of remorse and is converted by Cardinal Federico Borromeo. He becomes a penitent who frees Lucia and ends his criminal career.
The castle is traditionally identified with the Rocca di Vercurago, a fortress site above the Adda. The Unnamed was inspired by the historical figure Bernardino Visconti.
The ruins of the Castello dell'Innominato are on a hill above Vercurago and are reachable by hiking trails with views of the lake.

Piazza del Duomo — Renzo arrives in Milan
Renzo reaches Milan during the bread riots of November 1628 and sees the cathedral and the angry crowds. Dazed and carried along by the mob, he accidentally becomes a rioter and is noticed by a police spy. His reckless words in an inn lead to his arrest warrant and forced flight.
Construction of the Duomo began in 1386 and continued for centuries, with the facade still unfinished in Manzoni's time. Milan was the capital of the Spanish-ruled Duchy.
Milan's Gothic Cathedral is the city's primary landmark, open to visitors with rooftop terraces. The Piazza del Duomo is the heart of the city.

Corso Vittorio Emanuele area, Milan — Bread riot site
In the novel's great riot sequence, hungry crowds attack the Forno delle Grucce bakery, seizing flour and bread amid soaring prices. Renzo watches in astonishment as a baker is menaced and a mob drags a stolen loaf's weight in flour. The scene dramatizes the failures of Spanish economic policy and the volatility of the crowd.
The bread riots of 11 November 1628 were a real event in Milan, sparked by high prices after poor harvests and price controls. The Forno delle Grucce was a real bakery near the Duomo.
The exact bakery site is in the pedestrian area near the Duomo, now filled with shops. A plaque commemorates the historic bakery.
Via San Gregorio, Milan — Plague hospital
During the 1630 plague, Renzo returns to Milan and searches the lazzaretto among thousands of the dying for Lucia. He finds Father Cristoforo caring for the sick, and Don Rodrigo dying in a ward. Lucia, who has recovered, is reunited with Renzo, and Cristoforo releases her from her vow of chastity.
The Lazzaretto was built in the late 15th century as a quarantine hospital and housed thousands in the 1630 plague. It was dismantled in the late 19th century.
A fragment of the Lazzaretto's walls and the Church of San Carlo remain along Via San Gregorio and Via Lazzaretto. The church is a small surviving reminder of the plague hospital.

Adda river near Gorgonzola and Bergamo territory — Renzo's flight
After the riots, Renzo flees Milan on foot at night, reaching Gorgonzola and the Adda river. He crosses the border into the Republic of Venice's Bergamo territory, where he finds shelter with his cousin Bortolo and works at a silk mill. He remains there until the plague changes everything.
The Adda river formed the border between the Duchy of Milan and Venetian territory, offering escape from Spanish jurisdiction. Silk manufacturing flourished in the Bergamo area.
Gorgonzola is a town east of Milan known for its cheese, while the Adda is a regional park with trails. The area is popular for cycling.

Piazza Fontana, Milan — Cardinal's residence
Cardinal Federico Borromeo, the saintly archbishop of Milan, converses with the converted Unnamed and later reproaches Don Abbondio for his cowardice in refusing to marry Renzo and Lucia. His humane example contrasts with the timid priest and the corrupt nobles. He also oversees aid during the famine and plague.
Federico Borromeo (1564-1631) was archbishop of Milan and founded the Biblioteca Ambrosiana in 1609. The Archbishop's Palace stands beside the cathedral.
The Palazzo Arcivescovile remains the seat of the Archdiocese of Milan. Nearby, the Biblioteca Ambrosiana preserves Borromeo's collections.
